I am Setsuna Introduction:
"I Am Setsuna," released in 2016, is a role-playing video game (RPG) developed by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix. It was initially available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Microsoft Windows, with a Nintendo Switch version released in 2017 as a launch title for the console. The game's storyline is set in a world covered in snow and plagued by monsters. It follows the journey of Endir, a silent protagonist who becomes the guardian of Setsuna, a young woman chosen to be a sacrificial offering to appease the monsters in the Last Lands.
The gameplay of "I Am Setsuna" is designed to evoke the style of RPGs from the 1990s, often referred to as the genre's "golden age." It features an Active Time Battle system with unique mechanics.
Gameplay:
This game marked the debut project of Tokyo RPG Factory and went into production in 2014 with a relatively short development timeline. The team drew inspiration from the classic RPG "Chrono Trigger" (1995) and centered the game's narrative around the theme of sadness, using a visual motif of snow. The soundtrack, composed by Tomoki Miyoshi, predominantly consists of piano music performed by Randy Kerber. "I Am Setsuna" achieved strong sales, eventually turning a profit, and received positive reviews from critics. It was praised for its atmospheric world, captivating soundtrack, and engaging gameplay, although some critics noted a lack of visual diversity and low difficulty.
In the game, players control a party of characters as they explore various environments from an angled top-down perspective. They can access locations such as towns and dungeons by navigating the game's overworld. In towns, players can interact with villagers to uncover plot details and discover treasure chests containing useful items. Various items, including healing potions and "Fogstone" items for escaping battles, are available for purchase in shops throughout the game world. Additionally, there are a small number of side quests tied to each playable character, which become accessible when all characters are recruited and are triggered when the corresponding character is in the current party.
Battles in the game occur directly in the environments where enemies are encountered, rather than transitioning to a separate battle arena. Character health and magic are represented by HP and MP, respectively. Battles use a variation of the Active Time Battle System, similar to the one seen in the "Final Fantasy" series. After each character takes an action in battle, their ATB (Active Time Battle) gauge must refill before they can take another action. Available actions include standard attacks, special combat abilities, magic spells (referred to as "Techs"), and item usage. If multiple characters' ATB gauges are full, they will act in the order in which the player assigns their actions.
Each character can equip "Spritnite" crystals on their equipment, which provide passive bonuses and unlock abilities in the "Techs" menu. Some of these Techs can be combined to create new, powerful attacks, known as "Double Techs." When a character's ATB gauge is full or they take actions, a separate "Setsuna" gauge begins to fill. When this gauge is full, players can use a "Momentum" charge to enhance their character's actions, which can include dealing multiple attacks, recovering health, or inflicting critical damage on enemies.
The game's setting is a snow-covered land plagued by hostile demons. According to a long-standing tradition, a maiden is sacrificed in the distant Last Lands to appease these demons. The story begins with the mercenary Endir accepting a mission to assassinate Setsuna, the chosen sacrifice. However, Setsuna convinces him to become her guardian, and they are joined by her childhood friend Aeterna on their journey. Throughout their adventure, they encounter and are joined by other characters, including Nidr, the guard of a previous sacrifice and Setsuna's illegitimate father; Kir, a member of a tribe with magical abilities and shortened lifespans; and Julienne, a descendant of the ancient kingdom that once occupied the Last Lands. The party faces repeated attacks by a mysterious figure known as the Reaper, who is determined to kill Setsuna. Eventually, they confront the Reaper and learn of the ongoing monster attacks that are causing distress among the surviving human settlements.
Final Words:
As the group reaches the heart of the Last Lands, they encounter a woman known as the Time Judge. She reveals that the sacrifices are necessary to maintain a barrier that contains the Dark Samsara, a powerful entity. Aeterna, Setsuna's childhood friend, is revealed to be a clone capable of existing beyond the Last Lands. The Dark Samsara originated as a boy with exceptional magical abilities a thousand years ago and was subjected to experiments by an ancient kingdom attempting to create an eternal source of magic. The boy lost his consciousness and became a vengeful magical being, ultimately destroying the kingdom occupying the Last Lands and giving rise to the monsters. Setsuna's mother, Mana, who had been sacrificed in previous cycles, informed the Time Judge of Setsuna's potential to defeat the Dark Samsara. However, whenever Setsuna followed through with the sacrifice, the Time Judge would rewind time to repeat the cycle. In this particular cycle, Endir's actions have been influencing events. The Time Judge resurrects the Reaper, who adopts the name Fides, to assist the group before disappearing, leaving them with no means of rewinding time if the Dark Samsara prevails.
