Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy Introduction:
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is an action-adventure video game that draws its inspiration from Ancient Egyptian mythology. It was originally released for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. The development was handled by Eurocom, and THQ was responsible for its publication. In 2014, Nordic Games acquired THQ, leading to the formation of THQ Nordic. This resulted in a remastered version of the game becoming available worldwide for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux on November 10, 2017. Additionally, an enhanced physical version for the Nintendo Switch was released on January 29, 2019.
In Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, players assume the roles of two distinct characters: Sphinx, a fearless warrior, and Tutenkhamen, also known as the Mummy, who excels in puzzle-solving and logical thinking.
Gameplay:
The game unfolds in a fictional version of ancient Egypt during a turbulent period. The story begins with Sphinx and his fellow apprentice, Horus, receiving a mission from their master, Imhotep, to retrieve the legendary Blade of Osiris. This quest leads them to the ominous land of Uruk, where they ultimately find the Blade. Tragedy strikes as Horus is attacked and seemingly killed by a deadly ray protecting the Castle of Uruk. While Sphinx manages to obtain the Blade, he too is targeted by the ray and transported to an unknown location through a portal system.
Meanwhile, in the city of Luxor, young Prince Tutenkhamen is celebrating his birthday when his older brother, Akhenaten, captures him and performs a ritual to transform him into a mummy. Sphinx intervenes, disrupting the ritual and causing Tutenkhamen, Akhenaten, and their henchman Menes to be transported to the Castle of Uruk. Sphinx learns that fragments of Tutenkhamen's soul are stored in Canopic Vases and takes on the mission of gathering them to restore the prince. Inside the castle, it is revealed that "Akhenaten" is actually the dark god Set in disguise, with the real Akhenaten having been mummified like Tutenkhamen to allow Set to take his form. However, Sphinx's actions prevent Set from assuming Tutenkhamen's identity and seizing power in Luxor.
Sphinx and Imhotep devise a plan to utilize the Mummy/Tutenkhamen's immortality to their advantage. A single Canopic Vase can briefly bring him back to life, allowing him to navigate the trap-laden Castle of Uruk safely. Imhotep creates Bas-ket, who can infiltrate the castle and deliver the Vases to the Mummy. Throughout the adventure, the Mummy exploits his inability to be killed to survive traps and collect valuable items that assist Sphinx in his quest. In return, Sphinx locates more Canopic Vases and employs Bas-ket to send them to his undead companion.
During Sphinx's time in the city of Heliopolis, he discovers that the god Anubis has inflicted suffering on the people, turning many of them into stone statues. Sphinx's heroic nature appeals to Anubis, who gradually allows him to break the stone curse afflicting the people. However, Sphinx's tasks become increasingly perilous as Anubis tasks him with retrieving the "Sacred Crowns," powerful artifacts once wielded by the Egyptian gods.
The first crown, the Sacred Crown of Abydos, must be obtained from a city plagued by various disasters (caused by Set), including the illness of its mayor. Sphinx manages to save the mayor and is rewarded with the crown.
Each subsequent crown presents a greater challenge, with Sphinx defeating formidable adversaries such as the Geb Queen and the pharaoh of Heliopolis to acquire the Crowns of Uruk and Heliopolis, respectively. As Sphinx proves his strength to Anubis, the god reveals that he turned the people of Heliopolis into stone to shield them from the impending darkness brought by Set.
Introduction:
The Mummy eventually discovers the Sacred Crown of Set deep within the Castle of Uruk. However, he is paralyzed by Set while Bas-ket escapes with the crown.
With all four Sacred Crowns in hand, Anubis summons Osiris, another god, who explains that he and Set were once a single entity named Ra. Set's greed led him to steal power from Osiris and attempt to rule Egypt. Osiris uses his remaining power to transport Sphinx past the castle's defenses, where a climactic showdown between Sphinx and Set occurs. Set assumes his monstrous "true form," but Sphinx manages to defeat him. Although Set is not obliterated, Imhotep informs Sphinx that it is not his destiny. Instead, Osiris reunites with the weakened Set, forming Ra once more. Ra gives the Mummy the last Canopic Vase, but tragically, it is dropped and shattered. The game ends on a cliffhanger as Imhotep suggests there may be alternative means to restore Tutenkhamen to his human form.
